Buyer’s guide

Forex VPS questions, answered

Do I actually need a VPS for forex trading?

If you run Expert Advisors, copy trades, or simply want your charts and orders running 24/5 without leaving your home PC on, a VPS is worth it. It keeps MetaTrader online during power cuts, reboots and internet drops, and — sited near your broker — it can shave meaningful milliseconds off execution.

What latency should I be aiming for?

For most retail traders, anything under ~10 ms to your broker is excellent and below ~30 ms is fine. Scalpers and HFT strategies benefit from sub-1 ms, which usually means choosing a server in the same data centre as your broker (often LD4 in London or NY4 in New York).

How much RAM and CPU do I need?

A single MT4/MT5 terminal with a couple of EAs is happy on 2 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs. Run several terminals or indicator-heavy EAs and you’ll want 4 GB+ and 4 cores. Single-thread CPU speed matters more than core count for most EAs, which is why we weight it heavily.

Windows or Linux for a forex VPS?

MetaTrader is a Windows application, so the vast majority of forex traders use a Windows VPS (Windows Server 2019/2022). Linux is cheaper and lighter but means running MetaTrader through Wine, which we only recommend if you’re comfortable troubleshooting it.

Are these reviews sponsored?

No. No provider can buy a higher ranking or a better score. We do use some affiliate links to help fund the site — we may earn a commission if you sign up through them, at no cost to you — but they never change the order, which is set entirely by our research and scoring. See our methodology.
